The deck-laying team has reached the ship’s stern as they continue to cut, fit, and place each 3.5″ x3.5″ plank, fastening it to the underlying steel deck. Planks already laid and fastened to the deck in the mid-ship area are receiving cotton and oakum strands to fill the gaps between them, and will be sealed with caulk. Once dry, all plank surfaces will be sanded flush, oiled, primed, and painted in accordance with the historic Measure 21 camouflage scheme.

Volunteers are continuing to prepare spaces on the second deck, removing loose paint and preparing surfaces for cleaning and painting, including casemate 5. This casemate and others like it will serve as classrooms, educational spaces, and berths for the overnight program following reopening.
